Konark is located on the eastern part of Orissa state. It is famous for its Sun Temple. Lord Narasimhadeva built the Temple during Thirteenth century. Today The Temple has been enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Temple is built in the form of a 24- wheeled chariot of Sun God and is a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture. The sculpture of the chariot is shown along with seven horses. The 24-wheels symbolize the number of months in the Indian calendar or the hours of the day whereas even horses symbolize a week.
Konark is derived from a combination of two words-Kona meaning corner and Ark meaning the Sun. Bhubaneshwar, Konark and Puri are together famous as golden triangle of Orissa.
At the entrance of the Temple there are two huge stone lions and three impressive moods of the sun: the rising sun, the sun at noon and the setting sun at the corners of the Temple. And amazingly the images catch the rays of the sun according to their theme.
The beaches in Konark are renowned for their beauty. You can walk for leisure on the pristine beaches and enjoy the sights of sunrise and sunsets. Konark is the stage for one of the biggest dance festivals of India.
