Kolkata earlier Calcutta is one of the four metropolitan cities of India. The city is fringed on the banks of the river Hoogli and is the capital city of West Bengal.
There are a number of legends associated with the original name of the city. According to one legend it is believed that when Lord Shiva's wife set fire to herself as her father insulted her husband. Lord Shiva fetched her body from fire and started performing Tandava (dance of cosmic destruction). To stop Lord Shiva from destroying everything Lord Vishnu cut Sati into 51 pieces. As her toes fell in Kalighat, the city was named Kalikata and later came to be known as Calcutta.
