Chittorgarh Tour

Much before Maharana Udai Singh established the Sisodia capital at Udaipur, Chittorgarh served as the main seat of Sisodia power for several centuries.

The region gets its name from that of an ancient Prince, Chitrang and was presented to Bappa Rawal as dowry when he wed the last Solanki princess.

The Chittorgarh Fort dominates 700 acres of land atop a sandstone hillock and overlooks the city below. The history of Chittorgarh is laced with tragedy, passion, gore and intrigue. In fact the Rajputs consider the Chittorgarh Fort as jinxed because the fort has been witness to three massive jauhar's (mass suicides) during the course of its history; that is why Chittorgarh came to be known as the 'Masada of Rajasthan'.

In 1303 A.D. Allauhddin Khilji attacked Chittorgarh and wanted to capture the beautiful Rani Padmini. The royal queen chose death to dishonor and burnt to death with several other women of the royal household on a massive funeral pyre.

Places of tour interest within the Chittorgarh Fort are: Chittoreshwari Kalikamala Temple, Kumbha Shyamji Temple, Vijay Stambh, Rani Padmini's Palace, Kirti Stambh and the Gaumukh Kund.

The important gateways that lead to the Chittorgarh Fort are Hanuman Pol, Bhairon Pol, Ram Pol and Padal Pol. Pick up ethnic souvenirs from the local bazaars of Chittorgarh while on a Chittorgarh tour with Top Tourist Places.com
