Agra or Agraban is an ancient India city that finds a mention in ancient Hindu religious scriptures though the region came into limelight only when the mighty Mughal rulers shifted their capital to Agra from Delhi.
Famous the world over as home to the spectacular Taj Mahal, Agra in Uttar Pradesh, India is a honeymooner's delight. Tour the magnificent white Taj on an Agra tour with Top Tourist Places and experience the splendor of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A massive white mausoleum studded with emeralds, lapis, lazuli, rubies, amethyst and other precious stones, the Taj Mahal crowns the extreme end of a Char Bagh lawn flanked by a mosque and a rest house on either side. The monument is a living tribute to the undying affection shared by Emperor Shah Jahan and his love Mumtaz Mahal.
Besides the Taj Mahal, i.e. the Mughal stamp on all the other magnificent structures that were constructed in Agra in the 16th and 17th centuries you can explore the Chini ka Rauza, Itmad-Ud-Daullah's Tomb, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and Sikandra on an Agra tour.
Agra's history dates back to 1475 when Badal Singh built a fort on the present site of the Agra Fort. Sikander Lodi made this his capital on the opposite bank of the Yamuna in 1501. However, it was only with the Babar's victory over the last Lodi sultan in 1526, at Panipat, that Agra came into prominence.
Later, Agra fell to different hands. First to the Jats in 1761 and the Marathas in 1770. The British, ultimately, took over control in 1803. After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Agra lost its administrative control of the northwestern province to Allahabad.
