Guwahati - a city that grew on the banks of River Brahmaputra has its roots in ancient history. A vibrant city, Guwahati is one of the largest cities in Assam and is the largest tea - auction center in the world.
Guwahati, over the years has earned the sobriquet "gateway to the northeast" as all the seven northeastern states are very easily accessible from this city that serves as a junction. Guwahati charms with its rich cultural mix, colorful festivals and tribal traditions.
River Brahmaputra flows through the Guwahati city and divides it into equal halves, though North Guwahati is just a small township and South Guwahati is on its way to becoming a posh city.
Guwahati is a part of the region that was Ahom territory in the past. Ahoms, a north-Burmese tribe ruled the roost in Assam for 600 years from 13th century onwards. Aurangzeb, the Mughal Emperor who held sway over north India around the sixteenth century, tried to conquer Assam 17 times, but failed, because of the mighty Ahoms.
By the late 19th century, the British were well entrenched in the area. In 1900, the English set up Cotton College in Pan Bazaar, till date a premier college in northeastern India. When Meghalaya was carved out of the erstwhile Assam in the seventies, the capital of Assam was set up in Dispur, the twin-city of Guwahati.
