Kaziranga in Assam lies in the northeastern state of India. It was established in 1908with a motive to protect rhinos. In 1974 it was declared a national park. Kaziranga National Park lies on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River and sprawls on an area of about 430 square kilometers.
The vegetation in the Park, primarily elephant grass and swamps, is an ideal habitat for the Indian One-Horned Rhino. In 1940 Kaziranga got the status of a Wildlife Sanctuary for its controlled poaching.
Faunal species in the park constitute tiger population, wild buffalo, swamp deer, elephants, hog deer, wild boar, Hoolok gibbon, capped langur, Otters, Hog Badgers, Barasingha, Indian Bison, Jackal and ratel. Among reptilian population rock python and the monitor lizard are common.
Avi faunal species in the Park Kaziranga National Park include the Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black-Shouldered Kite, Black Kite, Brahminy Kite, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, White Tailed Eagle, Grey-Headed Fishing Eagle, Himalayan Griffon, etc. A large number of migratory birds visit the Park during winters. Migratory birds in the Park include Greylag Geese, Bar-Headed Geese, Ruddy Shelduck, Gadwall, Falcated Duck, Red-Crested Pochard and Northern Shoveller.
The best time to visit Kaziranga is from mid-November to early April months. One should not visit the Park during the monsoon months as Brahmaputra River bursts its banks flooding the low-lying grasslands. The animals thus migrate from low-lying area to higher region in the Kaziranga National Park.
