Chennai proliferated to its present proportions from a mere village cluster that existed around 2000 years ago.
Chennai used to be a cluster of fishing villages, one of which was used by the British east India Company to establish a trading post that was christened 'Madrasapatnam'. The Vijaynagar rulers leased the region to the east India Company and later in the famous 18th century Carnatic Wars; the east India Company established their political control in the area.
Britishers built Fort St. George that is an important tour attraction even today. The region came to be known as George Town that was later christened Madras in the post independence period. The name Chennai is a very recent development and the term literally translates to "tiny," in the native language.
Over the years Chennai became an important center of spice trade.
The centre of Tamil culture and literature, Chennai boasts of attractions such as the Kapaleswarar Temple, Parathasarathy Temple, Marina Beach, San Thome Cathedral, Government Museum and Art Gallery, Madras Harbor, National Deer Park and Madras Snake Park. Theosophical Society and Kalakshetra. Chennai is also home to colorful festivals, classical music and dance.
