Kanchipuram is a famous center for pilgrimage in central India. It was the capital city of the Pallavas, and later annexed by the Cholas kings. The city was also ruled by Muslim and British rulers for sometime. Do shop for the famous Kanchipuram saris if you have some cash to spare; these saris have a beauty that cannot be described in words, and the beautiful brocades are turned into family heirloom even if the rest of the sari wears out.
The city is famous for its old temples. It is considered one of the seven sacred cities in India, and attracts a crowd of devotees from all corners of the world. The Kamakshi Amman Temple, Varadaraja Temple and Ekambeshwara Temple are some of the most famous temples in the city.
The Kamakshi Amman Temple is dedicated to the Goddess Kamakshi, and is under the control of the Shankara Math. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is gold plated. The Kailasnath Temple is another one of Kanchipuram's pilgrimage destinations.
The Ekambeshwara Temple is the largest in Kanchipuram. It is surrounded by a stone wall. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is spread over 12.14 hectares. The Ekambeshwara Temple is one of the most beautiful in the city, with ornate mandapams and awe-inspiring gopurams. The temple is over 2000 years old.
