Spain – A Great Holiday Destination

Spain is a great coutry and possesses a rich culture. Spain’s delights are countless, ranging from Picasso to Paella, which attracts more than million travelers each year.

 

As more and more airports open and destinations become more accessible, it can be difficult to choose just exactly where to go to experience what the Iberian Peninsula has to offer.

 

A good place to start would be one of the country’s most famous cities. Situated on the edge of the Mediterranean, Barcelona, which was founded as a Roman city, has a monumental amount of sights and sounds to offer the discerning holidaymaker. Aside from the astounding architecture, including the Gothic cathedral of Santa Eulalia and Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, there are beaches, shops and restaurants galore. Perfect for a day or a long weekend, Barcelona is sure to excite and delight.

 

Down the coast from Barcelona, is the sun-worshippers paradise of Alicante. Perfect for relaxing on one of the many beaches or strolling around the narrow streets of the old town, Alicante is one of the top Spanish destinations, and it’s easy to see why. If you’d prefer something a little less sedate then you could always take a boat trip to the former pirates’ haven of Tabarca, or get on the train to see the Palmeral of Elche-a World Heritage site, and one of the largest palm groves in the world.

 

Further south, down the motorway, Murcia is one of the best ‘all-rounders’ in Spain. Featuring a mountainous backdrop, a lively city with some fabulous architecture, not to mention the Costa Blancan’ sunshine, Murcia has something to offer everyone. The area surrounding Murcia such as Mar Menor and its fabulous lagoon, is picturesque and offers some of the best sunsets seen anywhere.

 

The port city of Almeria is also incredibly popular due to it’s notoriety of being in one of the driest and warmest regions in Europe, averaging 330 days of sunshine per year! History buffs can visit the Moorish castle, Alcazaba, while movie experts can visit the desert of Tabernas, where numerous Hollywood westerns have been filmed. If that’s not enough, then you could always make your way to the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park which offers some exceptional geological features and some of the best diving sites in Spain.

 

Another favourite with tourists is Malaga which, due to its proximity to the Costa del Sol, is easily accessible and offers plenty in its own right. Here you can experience a bull-fight, visit the Picasso Museum and go skydiving, all in the same day! The towns near to Malaga are extremely popular, but if you think that it’s all British tourists who enjoy the Costa del Sol then think again, as the majority of visitors are Spanish.
