Travel to Tasmania

As an island off the south coast of Australia, Tasmania is considered as a beaten track with far less tourists to be able to go way off. But the place still offer something to you who have been to Australia a few times or are on your first trip to this part of the world.

One of the best ways to travel through Tasmania is on a self drive trip. You shouldn’t have any problems on the roads as they are peaceful, scenic and you wont have to travel too long a distance to get to where you need to. There are 19 National Parks in Tasmania and much of your route will be driving through them.

The things you will want to see in Tasmania are: Cradle Mountain, an park full of waterfalls, glaciers and huge mountain lakes, the Freycinet Peninsula, a coastal area of steep cliffs and good hiking opportunities, Cataract Gorge, where you can search for the Tasmanian Devil.

Hobart is the main airport in Tasmania and your starting point if you decide to fly. However, you can also get the ferry into Devonport. Hobart, capital of Tasmania, is a small fishing town on the waterfront, backed by mountain ranges.
Lake St Clair National Park is where you’ll find the Russell Falls – the highest waterfall in Australia. There are also some easy walking routes in this park where you may spot some platypuses  and Tasmanian devils.
Queenstown is a mining town and the landscape here is a lot more barren than the lush greenery you will have been used to.
Cradle Mountain National Park is the ultimate Tasmania experience where you can look out on deep blue lakes, green forests and mountain glaciers in the mist.
Launceston is the second largest city here and its easy to explore on foot. You’ll find lots of restaurants, cafes and some good museums.
Cataract Gorge is just a short walk from Launceston where you’ll find steep cliffs and you can have a go on the chairlift to get the best views.
Swansea and Freycinet National Park are a great spot for some daytrips – head to Fairy Penguin Rookery to see some of local wildlife or look out over Oyster Bay and the Peninsula. Its also a great place to try some of the freshly caught fish.
Tasman National Park is well known for its beautiful beaches and granite cliffs. For anyone who likes walking, there is also a great coastal path here called the Abel Tasman Coast Track.
Port Arthur is where you’ll find the famous prison and, if you like, you can join an evening ‘ghost tour’ to the historic sites and ruins here.

A Tasmania self drive is the best way to see the Island as you have the freedom to travel at your own pace and stop off at points where you want to see the sights.
