Founded in between the years 1703 and 1764 A.D., Bhavnagar was built by Bhavsinji Gohil, a local chieftain. This coastal city was established close to the Gulf of Khambat as the rulers were exploring possibilities through economic growth.
Available records indicate that the Gohils were Rajputs who migrated to Gujarat from Marwar in Rajasthan. The old Bhavnagar city was duly fortified replete with massive gates that led to the city.
Bhavnagar flourished as an important port city for more than 200 years. Over the years the rulers of Bhavnagar implemented progressive growth and development measures that led to the development and urbanization of Bhavnagar.
