Great idea for more than emergencies…..,
Aside from being an excellent option when stuck in traffic with no way of relieving oneself, I experienced an in-hospital problem after a procedure where I had to keep one leg straight for 12 hours with an IV running wide open to flush contrast dye out of my body. This necessitated someone rolling me onto my side and then rolling me back onto a pink, teeny, hard, plastic bedpan, if you can call it that – numerous times. The edges dug into my posterior and it felt like I was being sliced open. If I ever am in the hospital again for such a procedure, I am going to bring my own supply of these wonderful devices so I can be a do-it-myself patient. Highly recommend.

The gel quickly absorbed any “liquids” that entered. I even had to use one twice. I can’t speak for #2 but these little guys handle #1 from a male just fine.
I have not had a female passenger try one yet, nor do I plan on it. But they seem like they should work just fine.
